Google said the changes are in response to employee feedback, but some staffers are upset. The changes, which Google confirmed to The New York Times, include removing the option to thumbs-down a post. AdvertisementThe Times also reviewed an internal Google memo in which moderators said they thought collective thumbs-down votes were a "bullying tactic." In 2021, more than 250 Google employees called on the company to terminate contracts with Israel after IDF forces carried out strikes in Gaza. Shortly after, over a hundred Google employees gathered to protest Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion cloud-computing contract with Israel.

Over the past decade, I've traveled solo to every US state and most of the major national parks. Although I love traveling solo, I've faced many challenges along the way. AdvertisementI started traveling solo nearly a decade ago. Although I love traveling solo and having the freedom to make my own decisions, I'd be lying if I said there aren't challenges. Emily HartAlthough I'd love to say I've never missed out on anything due to traveling solo, that wouldn't be truthful.

But, since I'm also tired of dating apps, I decided to give speed dating a chance. This still exists in the speed dating framework, of course, because you can find out at the end of the experience that no one you liked liked you. The speed dating system takes away the planning, execution, time issues, and does ensure some sense of safety. Should you need to speak to someone regarding someone at speed dating, they have their full name and credit card info. I predict that, in the age of app fatigue and remote work, structured events like speed dating are going to make a giant comeback.

The last thing I expected after graduating from college and moving back home with my parents was to find my soulmate. I took a job waiting tables at a local Tex-Mex restaurant while I killed time applying to the Peace Corps. At my first mandatory all-staff meeting, the general manager commented how many people meet their future spouses working at that very restaurant. Passers-by stopped to commiserate with him and to try to lift his spirits. They brought him coffee, platters of food and changes of clothing, and welcomed him to their homes to wash up and get some sleep. “They were so kind, and they just couldn’t do enough,” said Mr. Brodutch, 42, an agronomist who grew pineapples on Kibbutz Kfar Azza before the attacks on Oct. 7. “There was a feeling of a common destiny.”The one-man sit-in mushroomed in the weeks after the attacks. Rupert Murdoch's The Wall Street Journal made widespread cuts to its DC bureau on Thursday in a restructuring that several insiders called a "bloodbath." They were also, however, expected, since staffers had been told a restructuring was coming in preparation for the installation of the Journal's new Washington coverage chief Damian Paletta, who starts February 5. The new Washington bureau will focus on politics, policy, defense, law, intelligence and national security. The expanded Finance & Economics coverage area will unify our reporting on the macroeconomy, global economic trends, monetary policy, credit and banking, and financial markets. Brent Kendall, the law bureau chief, will take on the expanded role of Justice, Judiciary and Law Editor.

It's hard for people to understand that I have siblings the same age as my kids. AdvertisementI still remember how my mom and I tried to corral the kids while eating burgers at the local restaurant years ago. People often try to correct me, thinking they might be my siblings' kids, my nieces and nephews. When they go to school and have a hard day, there are people there who know and love them. When I have a hard day, my mom is in the midst of the same stage of parenting — with a bit more wisdom on her side!

Young Entertainment Professionals is an online community of more than 10,000 early-career professionals in Hollywood. Young people in the entertainment industry vented that their career growth was stymied by forces outside of their control. At YEP events, Romero added, "there's always people that come up to me who are like, 'When I moved to LA, I didn't know anybody.' In 2023, a Netflix creative assistant founded the monthly newsletter The Hollywood Assistant, telling BI that newcomers have "no blueprint" for how to chart a course to steady employment and success. "They can help through the hard times that we have been having in the industry," Romero concluded.

Holding down multiple jobs has long been a backbreaking way for low-wage workers to get by. They freeze their employment histories with Equifax and hibernate their LinkedIn profiles, so employers can't see they're holding multiple jobs. Those with multiple jobs also seek out positions they hope will be OE-friendly — light on meetings, as well as on the workload. There's another incentive: Unlike most Americans, those who work multiple jobs don't have to worry about layoffs. There's something radical that happens to a worker's psychology when they have multiple jobs.

Even though I knew that going in, I needed a job — and a job at Disney sounded good. So I took the job as a Disney assistant, and part of me hoped that things would sort themselves out once I started working. Personally, I feel stuck as an assistant at Disney, and don't see any career mobility at all. But a lot of people stay in these creative executive roles and senior executive roles — and even junior executive roles, the rank closest to mine — for a long time. In the rare event that there's an opening, companies sometimes look for external candidates to fill open executive roles, which is also frustrating.

“We’ll just have to commiserate about the Eagles’ chances this year,” Mr. Holt said. Guests were seated at long tables for dinner — burrata and branzino — topped with flowers and cans of La Croix, which was one of the event’s sponsors. The comedian and actor Mae Martin shared a table with Eriona Hysolli, a scientist who is overseeing efforts to reintroduce the extinct woolly mammoth in Siberia. “There is an inherent ranking that comes with a list, which I feel, like, is always difficult to wrap your mind around when you’re talking about art,” he said. Mr. Torres said he turned preparation for the evening “into a project” by making an outfit, which included a pointy gold hat with a matching gold jacket and a blue tie around his waist.

A 32-year-old food industry worker in eastern Texas who asked to be identified by her Reddit username, Hilary Coyote, first heard about AI chatbot companions in June. (EvolveAI and SimplyAI's now-shuttered Soulmate app has no relation to "Soulmate AI: Your AI Companion," another app that appears in smartphone app stores and was developed by Turing App Lab.) AdvertisementAdvertisementEven though Russian airspace is closed to US airlines, many Americans may still end up flying through Russian skies. This includes four European carriers: Air Serbia, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, and Belarus' Belavia. Emirates' flight path from Dubai to Los Angeles on September 25 showed it flew over Russian airspace. Looking at the time of writing for mid-November, a ticket on Air India is nearly $2,000 cheaper than American. This was a particular concern earlier this year when Chinese airlines were using Russian airspace on routes to the US.

Sources said U.S. airlines are not expected to immediately take advantage of all 18 weekly flights. China Eastern 600115.SS, Xiamen Airlines and China Southern 600029.SS also fly scheduled service to the U.S., while United Airlines UAL.N, American Airlines AAL.O and Delta Airlines DAL.N currently operate passenger flights to China. The 24 weekly flights are still a fraction of the more than 150 round-trip flights allowed by each side before restrictions were imposed in early 2020 due to the COVID-pandemic. Previously, only eight weekly flights by Chinese carriers were allowed. Reuters reported in June Chinese airlines were avoiding flying over Russian airspace in newly approved flights to and from the U.S. but still using Russian airspace for other flights.

These are graduation photos, and their theme is “being more dead than alive,” according to the accompanying caption. Urban youth unemployment is at record levels, reaching 20.8% in May, and an influx of new job seekers will only increase the competition. Li Nian, a PhD student who graduated this past week, is among those to have posted “more dead than alive” style photos. After being inspired by examples online, Li took her own graduation photos, which are funny despite the tiredness depicted. “I thought I would remember such graduation photos for the rest of my life,” she told CNN.

In March 2020, Kristin Harmel was gearing up for the paperback publication of her 11th novel, “The Winemaker’s Wife.” Then the world came to a grinding halt (and many of us who aren’t married to a winemaker wished we were). “We called it our Oh Hey Rosé Zoom,” she said in an audio-only interview. “We all had a glass of wine and got on the Zoom together.”On April 15, 2020, Harmel and a handful of those novelists hosted a Facebook Live for their fans. “This community we thought was going to be a few hundred people has now grown to 170,000 members,” Harmel said. By the time I woke up the next morning, I think there were at least 2,000 comments and probably 700 or 800 emails in my inbox.”

But the bots using ChatGPT began to rapidly improve, and SirPugger realized the automated players would soon become almost indistinguishable from human players. In some cases, these AI-powered bots seemed to commiserate with real players, even complaining about the overabundance of bots. At the same time, bot scripts could eventually enhance rather than detract from the social aspects of online games. Online shooters like "PUBG" and "Fortnite" already populate their multiplayer lobbies with AI bots, but the social emphasis of MMOs means that they are uniquely well positioned to reap the prospective benefits of chatbot integration. Worlds would appear to become more populous, and though "real" players might still be cheated out of leaderboard slots, they wouldn't necessarily know it.

They come from far corners of the globe, speak different languages, span the ideological spectrum and range in age from 43 to 80. But one thing President Biden and the other leaders of the Group of 7 meeting in Japan this weekend have in common? For Mr. Biden and his counterparts from the world’s leading industrial powers, it is an age of democratic discontent when electorates seem perpetually dissatisfied with the presidents and prime ministers they have chosen. But their troubles have a way of following them and can limit their options and influence. He ended the day by skipping out about 90 minutes early from the leaders’ gala dinner on Miyajima island to take another call from home on the spending talks.
HONEY, BABY, MINE: A Mother and Daughter Talk Life, Death, Love (and Banana Pudding), by Laura Dern and Diane LaddWhen Diane Ladd is diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and given six months to live, her daughter Laura Dern looks at her and thinks, “You can’t die.” Determined to increase her mother’s lung capacity and life span, Dern gets the doctor’s permission to take Ladd on daily 15-minute walks, distracting her mother by asking questions about the past. Transcripts of those conversations are the beating heart of “Honey, Baby, Mine,” the actresses’ joint memoir, which also includes photographs, recipes, memorabilia and short, interspersed chapters written by each woman. They commiserate over the timeless frustrations of their industry, while also reflecting on what has slowly changed. Dern recalls visiting her mom’s sets as a child, catching the acting bug when Martin Scorsese asked her to appear as an extra in “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.” Allowing a child on the set was still frowned upon nearly two decades later, when they worked together on “Rambling Rose” (for which they became the only mother-daughter pair ever to have been nominated for Academy Awards for the same film) ‌and had to advocate for their director to be allowed to nurse her baby at work. By the time Dern co-starred in the 2017 TV mini-series “Big Little Lies,” actors’ children were so commonly present that, she writes, “we had effectively created a … day care.”
Just hours after Donald Trump became the first former president to be indicted, Republicans filed into a tavern northwest of Milwaukee to commiserate over Tuesday evening’s loss of a hard-fought race for a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat. As the clock approached midnight, a heated debate broke out between two men active in the local GOP, said Randy Marquardt , the party chairman in Washington County. One argued for loyalty to Mr. Trump, he said, while the other insisted it is time for the party to pick someone else as their 2024 presidential nominee. “It got ugly and people eventually went their separate ways to head home,” said Mr. Marquardt. “The other guy argued that Trump came with too much baggage, but there are still quite a few people who are all in with Trump.”Mr. Marquardt, who twice voted for the former president, says he thinks it is time to move on.
